How to contest a parking ticket in Miami

Parking tickets issued in Miami are processed by the Miami-Dade Clerk of the Court and Comptroller. To contest one, you request a court hearing, and you have 30 days from the date the citation was issued to do so. Payment is also due within 30 days, and fines increase after that, so file your request promptly.

You can request a hearing through the Clerk's Parking Violations Online System, by mail to the Parking Operations Department at 601 NW 1 Court, or in person at a Clerk's office. If someone other than the registered owner had care, custody or control of the car, the owner can name that person in an Affidavit to Transfer Liability, filed with the agency that issued the citation. Gather photos of signs, meters and pay-by-phone receipts.

Court hearings are held by Zoom or by phone, and you can check your hearing date in the online system. If you do not appear, you may be found guilty, and the court can add fines of up to $100 plus court costs. Citations left unpaid for more than 90 days are reported to a collection or credit reporting agency.

What to do, step by step

  1. Check the deadline

In Miami you generally have 30 days from the ticket date to contest it. Missing it can add late penalties.

  2. Gather your evidence

Photograph the signs, curb markings, meter or pay station, and where your car was parked. Keep receipts, permits and any repair or police records.

  3. Write your appeal

Answer the questions above. Keep it short and factual — reviewers read a lot of these, and a calm, specific letter with evidence is the most persuasive.

  4. Submit it on time

Submit online through Miami-Dade Clerk of the Court and Comptroller, Parking Operations Department, or mail it to Overtown Transit Village South, 601 NW 1 Court, 18th Floor, Miami, FL 33136. Keep a copy and proof that you sent it.

  5. Follow up

Your case is heard by a judge at a court hearing held by Zoom or phone, and if you do not appear you may be found guilty. If the court rules against you, it can add fines of up to $100 plus court costs, so prepare your evidence before the hearing date.

What if your appeal is denied?

A denial at the first review isn't the end. Most cities offer at least one more level — usually a hearing in person, by phone or by mail — where a different person looks at your evidence.

In Miami: Your case is heard by a judge at a court hearing held by Zoom or phone, and if you do not appear you may be found guilty. If the court rules against you, it can add fines of up to $100 plus court costs, so prepare your evidence before the hearing date.

Keep every notice and receipt. If you win at a later stage, any amount you paid is normally refunded.

Re: Request for review of parking citation 4012345678 — license plate 7XYZ442

To whom it may concern:

I am writing to contest parking citation 4012345678, issued on September 20, 2026 at 300 block of Main St to the vehicle with license plate 7XYZ442. I respectfully ask that the citation be dismissed.

Reason for contesting: The signs were missing, unclear or blocked.

The only no-parking sign on the block was covered by overgrown tree branches. Photos I took a few minutes after finding the ticket show the sign could not be seen from where I parked.

I have included the following evidence in support of this request: Two dated photos of the covered sign and a map showing where my car was parked.

I am requesting a court hearing within the 30 days allowed from the date this citation was issued, by October 20, 2026. I ask that the citation be dismissed based on the facts below.

Please review this citation and dismiss it. I would appreciate written confirmation of your decision, sent to the address above.

Sincerely,

Alex Morgan

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to contest a parking ticket in Miami?

The Miami-Dade Clerk says you have 30 days from the date the citation was issued to request a court hearing. Payment is due within the same 30 days, and the fine goes up after that, so do not wait to file your request.

How are Miami parking hearings held?

Court hearings are conducted through Zoom, and you can also join by phone. Check your hearing date and time in the Clerk's Parking Violations Online System, and join at the scheduled time with your evidence ready to share.

What if I was not driving the car in Miami?

If you are the registered owner, you can raise your defense at the court hearing. If someone else had care, custody or control of the vehicle, the owner can submit an Affidavit to Transfer Liability to the agency that issued the citation, and the person named in it can then request a hearing.

What happens if I lose or skip my Miami parking hearing?

If you fail to appear, you may be found guilty. At a hearing, the court may also add fines of up to $100 plus court costs. Citations unpaid for more than 90 days are reported to an outside collection or credit reporting agency.

Is it worth contesting a parking ticket?

If you have a genuine reason and some evidence — a hidden sign, a broken meter, a valid permit or a ticket with wrong details — a written appeal costs little and succeeds often enough to be worth the few minutes it takes.

What evidence helps the most?

Clear, dated photos of the signs, curb and meter; payment receipts or permits; and anything showing the ticket's details are wrong, such as the wrong plate or vehicle make.
