When resigning effective immediately makes sense
Leaving without notice is usually a last resort, but it's sometimes the right call: a medical issue that stops you working, a sudden caregiving need, harassment or unsafe conditions, or a role where staying on would cause more harm than good. In most US states employment is at will, so you can generally leave at any time.
Before you send it, check your contract or offer letter for a notice clause, and read your employee handbook. Some employers only pay out unused vacation if you give the required notice, and leaving abruptly may make you ineligible for rehire.
How to soften an immediate resignation
Acknowledge that you can't give the usual notice and apologize briefly for the inconvenience. You don't have to give a detailed reason; a short line about personal or health reasons is enough.
Then show good faith. Offer specific help, such as handover notes, passwords for shared accounts passed to your manager, or a limited window when you'll answer questions by email. Return company property promptly and say how you'll do it.
Your final pay and benefits
State rules on when a final paycheck is due vary, and some are stricter than others. Ask HR in writing when you'll be paid, whether unused paid time off will be paid out and when your health coverage ends, and keep their reply.
What to do, step by step
Tell your manager first
If you can, tell your manager in person or on a call before you send anything. The letter then confirms the conversation in writing instead of breaking the news.
Check your notice period
Look at your offer letter, contract or employee handbook. Two weeks is the usual courtesy in the US, but some roles ask for more, and leaving with the expected notice keeps you eligible for rehire.
Fill in your letter
Answer the questions above. Keep it short and positive: your title, your last day, a brief reason if you want to give one, and a thank-you.
Offer a smooth handover
List the one or two concrete things you'll do before you go, such as finishing a project, writing handover notes or training a replacement. It is the part managers remember.
Send it and keep a copy
Email it to your manager, copy HR if your company expects that, and save a copy for your records. Ask HR about your final paycheck, unused vacation and benefits.
What if your employer asks you to stay longer or leave sooner?
If your manager asks you to stay past your last day, you can say yes, say no, or offer a middle ground such as a few hours of remote help. Whatever you agree, confirm it in a short email so there's no confusion about your end date or pay.
Some employers accept a resignation and ask you to leave right away. In most US states employment is at will, so this is allowed, but many companies still pay out the notice period. Ask HR how your final pay, unused vacation and benefits will be handled.
If you receive a counteroffer, take a day to think it over. Remember the reasons you decided to leave, and if you turn it down, do it politely and in writing so the relationship stays positive.

Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to quit a job effective immediately?
For most at-will jobs in the US, yes. You can resign without notice, and your employer can't make you stay. If you signed an employment contract with a notice requirement, or you're covered by a union agreement, leaving early could have consequences under that agreement, so read it first.
Will resigning without notice hurt my references?
It can, which is why tone matters. A polite letter that acknowledges the short notice, explains briefly and offers concrete help often keeps the relationship intact. Many employers only confirm dates of employment anyway, but your manager's personal impression still matters for informal references.
Should I give a reason for an immediate resignation?
A short one helps your employer understand, but you don't owe details. Personal reasons or health reasons is enough. Never include private medical information you don't want in your personnel file.
What date should I put as my last day?
Use the date you send the letter, or the last day you actually worked if you've already stopped going in. Being exact helps payroll calculate your final paycheck correctly.
How long should a resignation letter be?
Short. Three or four brief paragraphs on a single page is plenty: that you're resigning, your last day, an offer to help with the transition and a thank-you. A resignation letter goes into your personnel file, so it isn't the place for complaints or a long explanation.
Do I have to give a reason for resigning?
No. You can simply say you are resigning and give your last day. Many people add a short, neutral reason such as a new opportunity, relocation or family reasons. If you'd rather keep it private, a line like saying it's the right time to move on is perfectly professional.
