Two weeks still applies to part-time work

Part-time employees are often students, people with second jobs or caregivers, so managers are used to schedules changing. Still, two weeks' notice is the same professional courtesy expected of full-time staff, and it gives your manager time to cover your regular shifts.

If you only work one or two shifts a week, your two weeks might only include a handful of shifts. List your last scheduled shift as your last day so there's no confusion.

Keep the reason short

The most common reasons for leaving a part-time job are a schedule conflict, school, a full-time job or a move. Any of these is fine to mention in one sentence, and the reason field is optional if you'd rather leave it out.

If your schedule is the only problem, consider asking about fewer shifts or different days before you resign. Some managers would rather keep a reliable employee on a lighter schedule.

Wrapping up

Return any uniform, keys or badge, and give your manager a personal email or address for your final pay stub and year-end tax forms. If you'd like to come back during school breaks, say so before you leave.

What to do, step by step

  1. Work out your last day

Count two weeks from the day you'll hand in the letter. If you work shifts, check the posted schedule so your last day matches a shift you're actually working.

  2. Talk to your manager

Tell your manager in person or by phone if you can, then hand over or email the letter the same day. It's more respectful than letting them find out from paperwork.

  3. Fill in your letter

Answer the questions above. Keep it brief and positive. A reason is optional, and a short thank-you goes a long way.

  4. Offer to help with the handover

Mention one or two specific ways you'll help, like training a replacement or writing down your routines. It makes you more likely to get a good reference.

  5. Keep a copy and ask about final pay

Save a copy of the letter and the date you gave it. Ask HR or your manager when you'll get your final paycheck and what happens to unused paid time off and benefits.

What if your employer tells you to leave before the two weeks are up?

Most US jobs are at will, so an employer can accept your notice and ask you to leave right away. Some pay you through the two weeks anyway; others don't. Ask how your final paycheck and any unused paid time off will be handled, and get the answer in writing.

If your manager doesn't respond to the letter, follow up with a short email confirming your last day. That gives you a dated record that you gave proper notice, which can matter for references and rehire eligibility.

If you're asked to stay longer than two weeks, you can agree, decline politely or offer limited help, such as answering questions by phone. Don't feel pressured to change plans with your new employer.

Dear Chris Patel,

Please accept this letter as my two weeks' notice of resignation from my position as Part-Time Barista with Bean There Coffee. My last day of work will be October 19, 2026.

My schedule no longer works with my other commitments.

I will work my remaining scheduled shifts, including my Saturday morning shifts, through my last day.

I would be glad to show a new barista our opening routine and how I keep the pastry case stocked.

Thank you for working around my class schedule for the past year. I have really enjoyed being part of this team.

Please send any final paperwork or questions to marcus.bell@email.com.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give two weeks' notice at a part-time job?

Usually it isn't legally required, but it's expected and it protects your reference and rehire eligibility. Check your handbook in case your employer has a specific notice policy for part-time staff.

Can I give less than two weeks at a part-time job?

You can, especially if your situation changed suddenly, but say so politely and offer whatever help you can. Giving less notice may affect whether you're eligible to be rehired.

Should I put my two weeks' notice in writing for a part-time job?

Yes. A short written notice, by email or on paper, confirms your last day and avoids misunderstandings about which shifts you'll work. It also gives you proof that you gave notice.

Is two weeks' notice required by law?

For most US jobs, no. Employment is usually at will, so either side can end it at any time. Two weeks is a professional courtesy that helps your employer plan and keeps you in good standing for references and rehire. A contract, union agreement or company policy may ask for a specific notice period, so check yours.

Do the two weeks start the day I hand in my letter?

Generally, yes. Your notice period starts when your employer receives it, so the last day is usually two weeks from that date. If you work shifts, pick a last day you're actually scheduled. Put the exact date in your letter so there's no confusion.
